National Recycling Awards
We are delighted to announce that Broadgate Estates were “Highly Commended” at the National Recycling Awards, held on the 15th June 2010.
The commendation, second place overall was received for the “Best Partnership Project for Recycling”to acknowledge the great work done by all parties involved in the Broadgate Environmental Working Group.
Over the past 4 years we have worked closely with all tenants at Broadgate to share best practice, maximise recycling and minimise waste sent to landfill. Collection and reporting of this information has been possible through the creation of the Broadgate Environmental Working Group which first met in early 2005. All major tenants have representation at the meetings, which take place every 6 months to agree annual targets, review progress, and share best practice.
Success stories include our estate wide glass and cardboard recycling which have seen Broadgate recycle 450 tonnes of glass and 260 tonnes of cardboard in 2009. The estate glass, card and battery recycling schemes employ 4 full time operatives, all of which is funded through the estate service charge to which all occupiers at Broadgate contribute.
Further developments at Broadgate through the success of the working group include:
• Transferring all multi-tenant buildings from landfill to incineration at the Edmonton Incineration plant in January 2007 allowing 2000 tonnes of general waste to be diverted away from landfill in 2007. This incineration has also continued through 2008 and 2009 despite the credit crunch.
• Over the last 3 years the group has worked towards maximising paper recycling by treating all paper as confidential which has added benefits for the tenants. In fact over 95% of Broadgate now participates in paper recycling.
• At the outset of 2009 we commenced a successful food composting service for all food producing retail outlets at Broadgate and in several buildings by working closely with Juniper – a food composting company. This has enabled us to compost over 60 tonnes of food at Broadgate during 2009.
• We also have an estate battery recycling scheme available to all buildings at the development which has enabled us to recycle approximately 2 tonnes of domestic batteries during the year.
Recognition of our strong collaboration and continued hard work on a national level demonstrates the great progression the group has made since its inception in 2005.
